Volunteers

We rely on volunteers to help teach classes and prepare projects. We arrange our schedule with 8-10 weeks of classes then a break of several weeks to reset the classroom and projects for the next class sessions. This also gives the students an opportunity to change to a different class to focus on a different aspect of sewing.

  • Monday – Students who have been with the sewing program for several years. Their projects are quite varied.
  • Tuesday – Other Fiber Arts such as weaving, crocheting, knitting, etc.
  • Wednesday – Two classes: Intermediate and Beginner students.
  • Saturday – Three classes: clothing construction and Beginner students.

We have volunteer opportunities for both short term and long term. For example:

  • Get to know our sewing studio and our other volunteers by helping prep materials for the classes or process new donations.
  • Arrange to help with a class as an aide. You may end up pinning seams, cutting fabric, helping to thread machines for beginners or helping an individual student. While you do this, you get to know the students and volunteers. This is a great way to get to know Under One Roof.
  • If you have a specific project that you would love to teach, contact us (below) to let us know your idea and what skill level is needed by the students so we can select the best group for you to work with.
  • Volunteer to help with a class during the next term. We can always use extra help getting beginners started with more one-on-one interactions.
