About

Welcome to Under One Roof. We’re dedicated to giving African immigrant women in the Twin Cities the very best in education in sewing, quilting and other fiber arts, with a focus on meeting the needs of the participants, providing social opportunities while learning and being culturally sensitive.

We started in 2012 as a community outreach program of Sub-Saharan African Youth and Family Services in Minnesota. We are continuing to reach out to new members of the community in order to help women learn useful skills and become comfortable in their new home. We still serve as a social gathering place, to support women who may feel isolated in a new country.

Our sewing studio consists of two classrooms and a storage room. Our core machines for teaching are 8 Smarter by Pfaff sewing machines which are supplemented by a variety of donated sewing machines and sergers. Classes are currently scheduled for 4 days a week in the mornings with some classes running concurrently.

We rely on donations for many of our materials. We accept donations given prior notice. We have limited storage space so we have to turn down some donations if they are not appropriate for our projects. Please contact us first and visit our Donations and Wish List page for more information.

We are always looking for volunteers with the sewing/quilting and fiber arts program. Contact us to visit a class or get more information. There are many ways to help out. Please see our volunteer page for additional information.

We currently have a waiting list for classes but please contact us if you are an African immigrant woman who is interested in learning about sewing, quilting or other fiber arts (knitting, crocheting, weaving, etc.). We would be happy to have you join our community of women working on fiber arts. Please see our student page for more information.

We hope you enjoy our featured projects. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us through our Contact Page.
